AIME Competition Guide: Scoring Changes, Difficulty Breakdown, and Prep Strategies

As a highly recognized international mathematics competition, the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) invites students who have successfully passed the qualification cutoff in the AMC 10/12. Recently, the qualification scoring system for the USA(J)MO has been adjusted, with the weight of AIME scores increasing. New Changes in USA(J)MO Qualification Scoring

Students who achieve high scores in the AMC 12 and AIME will be invited to the USAMO, while those with high scores in the AMC 10 and AIME will be invited to the USAJMO.

The qualification cutoff score for the USA(J)MO has changed from the previous formula: AMC Score + AIME Score × 10 to AMC Score + AIME Score × 20.

  • USAMO Standard Score = AMC 12 Score + 20 × AIME Score.
  • USAJMO Standard Score = AMC 10 Score + 20 × AIME Score.

Example: If a student scores 110 on the AMC 12 and 12 on the AIME, their USAMO qualification score would be: 110 + (12 × 20) = 350.

Note: Students with Chinese citizenship can only compete up to the AIME level and are not eligible for the USA(J)MO. Only U.S. citizens or students studying in the U.S. and Canada are eligible to participate in the USA(J)MO. However, reaching the USA(J)MO qualification cutoff remains a strong testament to a student's academic ability.

Based on recent years' cutoff scores, to qualify for the USAMO or USAJMO, students generally need to score at least 110 to 120+ on the AMC 10/12 and correctly answer at least 11 questions on the AIME.

AIME Competition Information

The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is a crucial step in the U.S. Mathematical Olympiad selection system. It aims to identify students with exceptional mathematical abilities and lay a solid foundation for their future competition and research endeavors.

Students in grade 12 or below who have qualified through the AMC 10/12 in the same competition year.

Registration Process

After qualifying through the AMC 10/12, candidates will receive an official email or SMS notification. Students must log in to the official registration portal (AMC China or ASDAN) to confirm their participation in the AIME.

Competition Format

Format: Individual competition, 15 questions. All answers are integers between 0 and 999.

Duration: 180 minutes.

Scoring: Total of 15 points. 1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for blank or incorrect answers.

The exam covers four main areas: Algebra, Geometry, Combinatorics & Probability, and Number Theory.

Specific topics include Vieta's formulas and applications of higher-degree equations, functional inequalities and basic abstract functions, trigonometric forms of complex numbers and geometric transformations in the complex plane, sequence construction and sequences with Diophantine equations, similarity transformations combining triangles and circles, cyclic quadrilaterals, power of a point theorem combined with sine and cosine laws, special triangle theorems (Stewart's theorem, Shoelace theorem, etc.), combinatorial methods and recursive thinking, classical and geometric probability models, divisibility and congruence concepts, number systems and base conversions, floor functions, and comprehensive applications of fundamental number theory theorems, prime factorization, LCM/GCD, and solving Diophantine equations.
